If you did not realize it, we are right in the perfect storm: IT is changing
I had the some time to finally test JoliCloud, the Netbook OS that promises seamless integration between end-user and… Guess who? The Cloud.
Now.. Don’t get me wrong: JoliCloud is a decent attempt to void the space between desktop computing and online applications and it does it pretty efficiently despite some quirks (but I will...

UPDATED.
It happens, once that one does something wrong without knowing where he is making a mistake..
This is what happened yesterday when I used mysqlslap test banch on an Amazon RDS machine.
The problem is that mysqlslap does not measure query performance, rather connection performance. It is heavily influenced by latency and networking speed. Now, consider...

Great service Amazon RDS.
It’s on my to-do list to evaluate it from a performance-wise perspective. The evaluation is a must as AWS is known to have steady but slow storage performance, I wonder if the RDS team did tweak their volumes.
But this is not the subject of the post:the fact is, there are two...

While emotional thinking may feel right, it’s rarely the way to see clarity.
Chill down a bit and be rational: things will start look different, decisions will have better outcome.
On October 26th I read the announce Amazon releases RDS, their managed MySQL service and the first thought was for the guys in Redmond and their...

VMware VCB works by creating snapshots of VMs in quiescing state.
If, while attempting to backup a VM, the following error shows up:
.. 'vcbMounter' 3076465472 error] Error: Backup snapshot already exists.
.. 'vcbMounter' 3076465472 error] An error occurred, cleaning up...
There are probably some hanging snapshots of the VM that need to go.
It happens often while using...

Hooking the lizard brain up to the cerebral cortex
This is the title Dave Winer (the talkative inventor of RSS) has given to one of his most recent posts, where, thanks to the imaginative idea of one of his friends who wants to be kept anonymous, he manages to de-link DNS from address resolution.
No, it...

As noted earlier: transferring huge data files with TCP/IP between Clouds is a pain…
Asperasoft is well known for their FASP product: a Layer 7 protocol for fast and reliable file transfer that found its habitat in the video industry.
Borrowing from their experience, the guys at Aspera released an AWS appliance that implements a full...

I have seen this at CloudStorm in Bruxelles.
B-Virtual is a Belgian company living symbiotically with cloud solution provider A-Server and developing an IDA-based (Information Dispersal Algorithm) file system.
A traditional disk subsystem obtains resiliency against data-loss by duplicating information (RAID 1 for example) or by adding check-sum stripes (for example: RAID 5). In typical...

Stunning as things go.
VMware launches vCloud Express: a long due API interface to manage capacity dubbed as “Cloud”.
If you have a look on the Internet everybody now defines it as the way to make Clouds.
The real news, and it’s somewhat less of public domain, is that RightScale (my darling company) is supporting vCloud...
